In Oyo State, Commissioner of Police Larry Ulo recently led an enforcement team to monitor compliance among motorists regarding third-party motor insurance in key areas of Auta. According to the state's Police Public Relations Officer, Omala UTA, the operation indicated a significant number of motorists were adhering to the directive. Some motorists requested additional time to update their vehicle insurance, and the Commissioner took the opportunity to educate drivers on the importance of having this insurance, urging those who haven't yet obtained it to do so.

During the enforcement campaign, which began on February 1, 2025, the police observed that many individuals were driving without even the minimum requirement of third-party insurance. The intention behind the enforcement was not just compliance, but also to ensure that victims of road accidents could receive compensation, as many drivers in Nigeria fail to carry this essential insurance.

The operation involved police officers visiting various locations in the city, including Ibara and Adig, and while many drivers had their insurance in order, others were either unaware that the enforcement had begun or simply did not have the necessary documentation. Importantly, the operation was described as civil and successful, with no arrests made, as the police recognized that many motorists were uninformed about the necessity of insurance.

Concerns were addressed regarding potential harassment or extortion by police during these checks. The Police Public Relations Officer assured that there would be no tolerance for such behavior, emphasizing that the goal was sole sensitization. While police would flag down vehicles lacking insurance, they were instructed to avoid extorting money from motorists. Instead, vehicles without insurance would be impounded until proof of coverage could be provided.

Overall, the initiative aimed to enhance awareness and ensure that motorists understood the importance of third-party insurance, contributing to safer roads and better compensation for accident victims in the state.
