NOA Flags Off Campaign On Dangers Of Scooping Fuel From Fallen Tanker 

A 2-hour drive from Abuja, the nation's capital, takes us to the Lambert Community in the Gara Local Government Area of Niger State. This community acts as a transit corridor for trucks transporting farm produce to some southern parts of the country. Lambert Community is about 30 minutes away from Deco Community, the site of a recent tanker explosion that claimed nearly 100 lives.

This outreach by the National Orientation Agency is a presidential directive, and the agency aims to encourage community leaders to spearhead the campaign efforts. It is crucial that the community works together to address this issue. If a community firmly establishes that certain behaviors are unacceptable, and when incidents occur, the response should be to assist those whose investments are jeopardized. We must caution our children and the people in Nigeria, not just at the local government level, to cease these dangerous attitudes. It’s crucial to emphasize that if a vehicle has fallen, no one should attempt to remove anything from it; doing so is considered stealing.

Mr. Sunday GNA, a youth leader from Deco Community, lost a relative in the explosion and urges the government to address the poor state of the roads. The ongoing road construction lacks proper shoulders, making it extremely difficult for drivers to regain control if they lose it. He believes the federal government should prioritize the completion of this project.

His views are also echoed by the chairman of the Trailer Park Association in Gurara Local Government Area. He points out that the trailer park can accommodate only about 200 vehicles, yet more than 500 vehicles park along the roadside daily.

The National Orientation Agency plans to initiate this community engagement from Lambert Community and will extend it to all 774 local government areas in Nigeria. The clear message from today's event is that community leaders must take the lead in conveying the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers.
