Controversial Social Media Personality Sparks Outrage by Wearing Police Uniform in Latest Video
Lagos – The controversial social media influencer, Matens O, known widely as “Very Dark Man,” has once again sparked a public outcry. While still entangled in the “Biski Saga,” Matens recently posted a video in which he passionately discussed his social media mission – this time, clad in a Nigerian police uniform. The video, which has quickly gone viral, has drawn widespread criticism and prompted the Nigerian police to investigate the source of the uniform.
Muji, spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, confirmed that an inquiry is underway to uncover how the uniform was obtained. The police further emphasized their support for young Nigerians’ creativity in content creation but issued a stern warning against the misuse of official police attire or insignia.
Social Media Debate: Legal or Illegal?
The incident has reignited the debate surrounding the legality of using police uniforms in social media content. Critics argue that allowing civilians to wear these uniforms undermines public trust, particularly in a country grappling with security challenges. As CK, a public commentator, noted, “There are laws in place under the penal and criminal codes that restrict the unauthorized use of official uniforms. This is for the public’s protection.”
Despite the caution, some argue that content creators can still promote the police in positive ways without donning official attire. Legal analysts suggest that actors or influencers can collaborate with authorities or use replica uniforms with proper permissions, a practice commonly observed in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.
