The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over 53 vehicles and $180,000 USD to the Canadian police on behalf of its citizens who were victims of internet fraud and extortion in Nigeria. Chairman of the EFCC, Oloi, handed over the recovery documents to a Canadian senior police analyst and police officer Celese ARA. This action is part of the EFCC's core mandate to fight transborder financial crimes and ensure that victims of such crimes are restituted.

This collaborative effort between the Canadian government and Nigeria began in January 2022, leading to the recovery of 53 vehicles worth over $2 million. Some of the vehicles were traced with a vehicle inspection number provided by the Canadian authorities to the Nigerian government. Additionally, the EFCC recovered approximately $16,300 of the $32,000 Canadian dollars worth of bitcoin that Sandra Butler, a Canadian citizen and victim of a romance scam, had sent to a suspect in Nigeria. Another investigation involved Lena Bamas, a Canadian citizen who lost over $300,000 Canadian dollars in a fraudulent bitcoin transaction. The EFCC successfully recovered $164,000 USD from that amount.

The EFCC's actions demonstrate the Nigerian government's commitment to not tolerating any financial crimes. The EFCC aims to ensure Nigeria is free of financial crime and is accountable to its citizens.
