Alleged Terrorism Financing: NLC Threatens Showdown If Ajaero Is Arrested
The deputy president of NLC, Kabiru Adani, has directed all its affiliates and state councils to immediately begin the process of mobilizing their members across the 36 states and the FCT Abuja to take all necessary actions, including mass protests and industrial actions if Comrade Ajaero is arrested. This directive comes after a police intelligence invitation was sent to the president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, to appear on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, on charges related to criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, reasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. The Congress President was invited to report at the police by 10 a.m. today. The NLC is working with its lawyers to seek an extension of time but maintains that the charges by the Nigerian police against the Congress leadership are not legitimate.
This resolution was reached at the end of an emergency National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, with some executives joining virtually. The NLC affirmed its commitment to abiding by the rule of law and due process, stating that they will honor the invitation of the Nigerian police. However, the NLC's president, through its lawyers, has requested the interview to be rescheduled to Wednesday, August 29, 2024. This is to protect the integrity and independence of the labor movement.
