IPv6 Will Improve E-Governance and Networks, Say Experts

In the nation's capital, the Director General of the National Information Development Agency, Kashif Inua, emphasized that the adoption of Internet Protocol version six (IPv6) will enable the tracing of IP addresses to unique users, unlike IPv4. Mr. Inua shared this insight at the IPv6 Digital Summit held in Abuja. Celestin Area reported that Internet Protocol version 6 is a Next Generation Internet Protocol standard, intended to replace IPv4, which is still widely used by many internet services today. IPv6 is a well-established protocol that enables networks to connect many devices and expand networks without relying on additional resources.

In Nigeria, there are over 3 million IP addresses, with over 200 Nigerians using one IP address. This is due to the usage of IPv4, which allows many devices to be connected to one IP address. The adoption of IPv6 is important to help address cybercrime by ensuring that every device is uniquely identified. Discussions at this Summit will focus on the implementation of IPv6, challenges, opportunities, and how it can help improve e-governance and build more resilient networks. This will help to address cybercrime in Nigeria, as uniquely identifying every device on the internet will make it difficult for anybody to commit a crime because they can be traced back to the source.

The goal is to move at least 50% of users to IPv6 in the next couple of years, aligning with the worldwide average. Achieving this target is crucial to protect the country from becoming extremely vulnerable while also becoming more powerful. To guide the adoption of IPv6 from the current 1% recorded by Nigeria to 100%, a whitepaper was presented. Nigeria can build resilience and improve internet connectivity by reviewing regulations and policies that discourage internet service providers from investing in internet infrastructure. This will ensure better connectivity for all.
