In Chandler, Arizona, there's a heartwarming story about Doug, a 97-year-old World War II veteran who is the most loyal customer at his local Arby's restaurant.
One day, a curious employee named Travis Coye wanted to know more about Doug and his love for the food at Arby's. When he asked Doug why he keeps coming back, Doug shared, "This is the only place I can get a sandwich or get anything else to eat that doesn’t hurt my stomach." It's clear that Doug truly enjoys the food and feels comfortable at the restaurant.
Despite living in a nearby retirement home, Doug always makes the effort to have his daily meal at Arby's, and he even has his own favorite table where he enjoys his food. The staff treats him like family, going out of their way to make him feel welcome. The manager, Christina Gamage, shared, "He comes in with a walker, as soon as we see him come to the doors, we try [to] grab the doors for him. He’s gone through a lot being a veteran, coming in, being in a retirement home, but he doesn’t have family."
The staff's kindness and care for Doug is truly heartwarming. They surprised him with a $200 gift card as a gesture of appreciation, and many of them even gave Doug their phone numbers in case he needed anything. They also offered to bring his favorite meal to the retirement home in case he couldn't make it to the restaurant.
After Doug's story spread nationally, Arby's gave him an incredible gift - free food for the rest of his life. Doug never has to worry about where his next meal is coming from, and he now has more time to build meaningful friendships.
