China's dismissal of UN human rights recommendations has sparked widespread criticism.
Geneva [Switzerland], June 26 (ANI): A coalition of human rights organizations has sharply criticized China for not adopting numerous recommendations aimed at addressing its escalating human rights crisis.
The Chinese government's June 11 response to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) recommendations, conducted by the United Nations earlier in January, is viewed as a blatant disregard for international human rights norms.
The UPR is a process every four to five years where all 193 UN member states are evaluated on their human rights records.
In the latest review, China accepted 290 of 428 recommendations, partially accepted 8, noted 32, and rejected 98. Yet, the accepted recommendations do not address the severe human rights violations highlighted by UN member states, including crimes against humanity, torture, forced disappearances, and the persecution of human rights defenders and journalists.
In the lead-up to the review, the Chinese government, repeating its actions from previous UPR cycles in 2009, 2013, and 2018, provided misleading information and prevented domestic civil society groups from contributing to the state report or the review, as stated in a joint statement by non-governmental organizations on June 25.
An intensive lobbying effort resulted in some states posing soft questions and making vague recommendations, which allowed Beijing to project an image of compliance.
However, several countries maintained a principled position, voicing legitimate concerns based on evidence gathered by non-governmental organizations, UN special procedures, treaty bodies, and the UN Human Rights Office.
Nonetheless, China outright rejected all recommendations that addressed serious human rights abuses and the impunity of those responsible, leading to a significant 30 percent rejection rate.
