Nigeria News: The Federal Government Drag the Governors of the 36 States at the Supreme Court over their alleged

The Federal Government has taken legal action against the Governors of the 36 States at the Supreme Court over their alleged misconduct in the administration of Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The government is seeking full autonomy for all LGAs in the country as the third tier of government. Specifically, it wants to prevent state governors from unilaterally dissolving democratically elected local government leaders and from controlling the funds meant for the local governments.

The government also wants to stop governors from appointing Caretaker Committees to run the affairs of local governments and to ensure that funds from the Federation Account are directly channeled to the local governments as stipulated in the Constitution.

The Supreme Court has set May 30 as the date for the hearing of the suit.
